My husband and I both love loose leaf teas and trying interesting new varieties, so I was excited to try out this Comfort Tea blend from Culinary Teas.  They sent me out a sample packet, so the first thing I did was to open it up and give a nice sniff to the loose leaf tea.  Wow, what a great blend of sweet and spicy – I’m getting notes of peppermint, anise, and something floral (which is obvious also by looking at the tea leaves, since there are lovely pink petals as part of the mix).  The instructions say to use a teaspoon and brew for 3-5 minutes.  I used a little bit short of a teaspoon, so I ended up brewing for almost 6 minutes to get it strong enough, but that’s my own fault for not measuring accurately!  The resulting tea is a nice light yellow color and has a lovely flavor.  I definitely can taste some anise, which is a flavor I love, and that sweet and spicy blend that I sensed from the initial aroma is nicely balanced in the final tea.  It’s a lovely way to relax at the end of the day.

My husband and I are both big fans of loose leaf teas and love trying new varieties. I typically love mint teas and licorice is one of my favorite flavors in general, so I was really excited to try out this Licorice Mint tea from Culinary Teas. The tea visually is a nice quality, with large pieces of the leaves that make up the herbal mixture. I used one of my single cup tea infusers to make up a cup of this tea. The instructions said to use 1 teaspoon and brew for 3-5 minutes. I ended up using a bit less than a teaspoon for four minutes and it really makes a lovely cup of tea! The licorice flavor is somewhat subtle, but lingers nicely on my palate. The peppermint is very soothing and relaxing, like any good cup of mint tea should be! This is a great tea to have to wind down in the evening after a long, stressful day.

My husband and kids love using bar soap when they shower and my daughter’s favorite scent is vanilla, so I was really happy to try out soap.com’s Vanilla Parisian Indulgence variety. It’s quite a name for a soap, but it really has quite a fragrance! It’s sweet, without being cloying and really has a lovely complex blend of vanilla with the hazelnut fragrance notes. The soap itself is clearly high quality, pressed in a way similar to artisan soaps that i see at local boutiques. The light brown color is pleasant, almost like a milk chocolate hue. The bar is large enough to be easily grippable as well. My daughter is loving using this for her showers.

My scissors always seem to be disappearing, not where they are supposed to be just when I really need them, so I was happy to try out these scissors from Evergreen Supply. I’m really impressed with how comfortable and high quality these are. The inside of the hand grips are lightly rubberized, which makes them soft and really comfortable to grip. It’s really useful for our family that they work find either left or right handed. Most importantly, though, is the fact that the blades are extremely sharp and straight, so that they slice quickly and easily through paper, fabric, felt, and more. I like that they come with a plastic blade guard that can be used for storage to keep the scissors and your hands safe. These will definitely be my go to pair of scissors for a long time to come.

My husband and I have really been trying to eat healthier recently, and we love including quinoa as part of this, since it tastes good, is easy to make, and is packed with good protein and nutritional content. I was excited to try out this Soul Organics white quinoa. It’s great getting it in the huge 4 lb bag – it’ll last through a number of meals! The grain itself is just as I expect from ones I’ve purchased locally at a variety of supermarkets or natural food stores. It is prewashed which makes it very easy to cook and go. Our favorite quinoa recipe at the moment is “zesty quinoa salad”, which includes lime juice, black beans, cilantro, avocado, scallions, and spices (we usually leave out the fresh cherry tomatoes). The Soul Organics product cooks up nicely for this recipe – delish! At just under $7 per pound it is competitively priced with other quinoas sold on Amazon as well.

3 My Little Pony Surprise Eggs by Bon Bon Buddies

I have two kids who are absolutely obsessed at the moment with My Little Pony, so I was so very excited to order these surprise eggs and see their reaction! I know that these kinds of eggs are really fun and popular right now – in fact we got Kinder Surprise eggs recently while in Canada (which are unfortunately illegal in the US due to a provision about the toys being physically inside the edible chocolate), so I knew from our trip how much fun it is to watch them open up the eggs. These surprise eggs are light purple plastic filled with My Little Pony goodies. They were very easy for my young kids to open, which is always a plus.

Each of our eggs has a small packet of light pink candy hearts and a sticker (we happened to get three of Pinkie Pie!). Then there is a little toy prize in each one (and a small paper insert which shows the possible toys). We got all three of the small plastic photo frames with one or two My Little Pony characters pictured on each.

My kids had a lot of fun opening them up, although I have to admit that they weren’t overly thrilled with the contents. The little pictures are cute and will probably end up on my daughter’s dresser or desk, although I wish they were more of an interactive toy like a figure of one of the characters.

10-Minute Declutter: The Stress-Free Habit for Simplifying Your Home

Ok, I have to admit it…I need help when it comes to the clutter department. Our home over the years has just kept accumulating things as our kids grow and it’s gotten to the point recently where it is embarrassing to invite people over and it’s just overwhelming to try to get started. So when I had the chance to review this book, I figured it was worth a shot! I’m not big on “self help” type books, but I have to say that I really did enjoy reading through this. The authors have a very friendly and conversational style that makes what could be an extremely dry subject actually interesting. I appreciate the fact that they clearly acknowledge that organization is not easy for everyone and walk through all the reasons that people develop clutter in the first place and how to counteract each one.

The idea of building up a habit of 10 minutes a day to declutter a bit at a time is really appealing. Trying to tackle the whole house at once is just so much that I can’t even figure out where to start, but the idea of breaking it up into tiny pieces seems quite manageable. The authors give some suggestions of what a 10 minute session might include, such as going through the contents of a single drawer or placing unneeded items into a giveaway box for Goodwill and taking that box out to the car. They suggest starting with the highest visibility rooms (like the kitchen or family room) to help build a sense of accomplishment. I hadn’t really thought about it that way, but their logic now makes a lot of sense to me. They also suggest spending multiple days on one room until that room is fully decluttered, then moving onto the next room.

After the first few chapters that set out their general philosophy and how to get started, the authors have short chapters that individually cover all the different room and areas that are found in a typical home. I like this layout in the book, because it allows me to just browse to the section for a certain area (bathroom, closet, pantry, etc.) when I’m ready to start organizing that portion of my house, rather than get bogged down in lots of extra details weeks or months before I’m ready to use them.

Right now I’m on vacation with my family. When we get back home I plan to start including 10 minutes a day in the evenings after work, using this book to help me work through the whole house. I’m really excited that I finally have a game plan to get our house under control!
